Mayte Bayolo Alonso is an attorney who has dedicated her professional career to being a public defender and a civil rights attorney. She has long fought against oppression in the legal system as a Puerto Rican woman blazing new pathways within the legal field and devoting her career to justice. Her career has been one of firsts; she is the first Puerto Rican woman to be a part of two federal death penalty trials and the first Puerto Rican woman to be federally appointed as a certified federal mitigation specialist.
She started her legal career in public defense and intentionally directed her work toward supporting communities facing the highest levels of inequity. She continued down this path to the ACLU of Puerto Rico, where she played an instrumental role in preventing the passage of discriminatory legislation and upholding women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive rights, voting rights, racial justice, worker’s rights, and prisoner’s rights, amongst other things.
Currently, she is focusing her efforts on the critical defense of reproductive freedom on the island and the continental United States. In conjunction with the National Organization for Women, she has convened a Chapter in Puerto Rico to expand services to those most in need. Furthermore, she assists in disaster recovery efforts in Puerto Rico to ensure the well-being and reconstruction of the island.
